STRUCTURAL TIMBER AWARDS 2021: PAVILION6th of October 2021
IQL Pavilion in Stratford is the overall winner at the Structural Timber Awards 2021.
Split over three floors, the Pavilion is an extremely lightweight timber structure that sits on top of a DLR tunnel with limited allowances for additional weight or foundations. Constructed using cross-laminated and glue-laminated timber panels, only shallow concrete foundations were needed. Timber has a much lower carbon footprint than more traditional materials and provides warmth and tactility to the interior.
"Sustainable timber buildings are not only the optimal way of reaching zero carbon targets but are also aesthetically and structurally outstanding.”
Andrew Carpenter, Chief Executive of the Structural Timber Association
ON SITE: SWANSEA ARENA1st of October 2021
Gold pleated cladding of the Swansea Arena is well underway. Perforations in the anodised aluminium panels incorporate over 93,000 individual LEDs which enable the facade to become a giant moving image.
The Swansea Arena is a key element in the £135m Copr Bay phase one district being developed by Swansea Council and advised by development managers RivingtonHark.
Due to open its doors in early 2022, this multi-purpose 3,500-capacity indoor arena, to be operated by the Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG), will bring a wide variety of live entertainment to Swansea including music, comedy, theatre and e-sports.
Buckingham Group Contracting are leading on Copr Bay phase one’s construction.

A GIFT TO THE CITY: SAB, LEIPZIG9th of September 2021
Sächsische Aufbaubank (SAB) building in Leipzig, Germany was officially opened today with a ceremony of over 100 guests to mark the occasion.
“With its new location in the immediate vicinity of the historic city centre, the SAB is setting an architectural mark of respect in Leipzig. The move to the bank and the jobs are good for our city. The redesign of the former Robotron area also created a public space for the people of Leipzig; I am sure that this place will establish itself as a meeting place where young and old, locals and newcomers, guests and travelers will feel comfortable."
Burkhard Jung, Lord Mayor of the City of Leipzig
“The architecturally outstanding ensemble expresses the bank's serving function for the community. With its forum, it creates a high-quality public space in the centre of Leipzig. The innovative forest of columns impresses with its play of light and shadow and its transparency and permeability. As a place of work for the bank's employees, the building sets new standards for the working world in the 21st century."

STAIRS: SAB, LEIPZIG31st of August 2021
For the Sächsische Aufbaubank (SAB) in Leipzig, ACME has developed the building cores to prioritize stairs over lifts. The usual fire escape stair void has been widened to ensure daylight on all levels. Acoustic absorption has been installed in the soffit to allow the core to remain open to the offices. The core enclosure has been cast in-situ, with precast steps and railings. To invite more use of the stair, the concrete for steps and railings has been precast and polished, making it feel more precious.
Prefabricated off-site at Betonstein R. Bayer's Zwickau factory in Germany, the stairs and parapet were cast upside down. After curing, they were turned and polished.
On site, each stair flight weighing 4.5 tons and its integrated handrail weighing 2.1 tons was carefully craned into the concrete stair shafts. Any transport holes and assembly anchors subsequently closed and polished out, leaving a beautiful continuous polished concrete void at the centre of every core.
OPENING: SAB, LEIPZIG17th of August 2021
Final construction site visit before the public opening of the SAB building in Leipzig, Germany. The new office headquarters of Sächsische Aufbaubank (SAB) is nearly complete and will be officially opened on 9th September 2021.
ACME won the international competition in 2013, and after a long construction journey, we look forward to the citizens of Leipzig exploring the public space for the first time.
Located next to Leipzig's main train station and occupying an entire block in the city centre, the site is defined through an L shaped building framing a new public space. The building provides 500 workspaces, a conference centre, auditorium, consultation rooms and a restaurant. The public space is delineated by a forest of columns grouped around a large central clearing, populated by landscaping, seating and a mirror lake. In baroque times, this area was occupied by Schmuckgaerten, ornamental gardens where one could escape the dense city for a while, and we hope the public space will be able to continue this tradition into the future.
PLANNING SUBMITTED: H1, ELEPHANT PARK12th of August 2021
H1 development, one of the most sustainable new office buildings in London, progresses to planning stage.
This is ACME's tallest timber building to date and it sets a new benchmark for timber structures in the city. Located directly beside Elephant Park, greenery surrounds the ground floor level and extends up onto the south-facing stepped outdoor terraces located on every level of the building. The new building form sensitively responds to site constraints and provides modern, flexible, and open workspace that is adaptable for the future.
