Damascus is one of the oldest cities in the world, with a wealth of cultural and architectural heritage. The architectural identity of the city can be found in many scales, from figure group plan to its layout of courtyards, souks and its architectural elements.
The master plan site is strategically located on the Southern Ring Road, 8km south of the Old City of Damascus, and with direct connections to Beirut, Amman and the Airport. The Ring Road site (RRD) is surrounded by the residential areas of Mazzeh and Kafr Sousseh, the main Technical University Faculties and is in close proximity to the famous Shia pilgrimage Shrine of Lady Zeinab.
The brief asked for a flexible framework that integrates a mixed use community with a large retail scheme, hotels, offices and apartments. Our master plan seeks to work with a framework of streets and public spaces familiar in Damascus, with a reinterpretation of the traditional outside souk at its heart. Pedestrian spaces and landscaping take precedence over vehicles, with parking and servicing organised through a network of interconnected underground basements.
