Wyuna is located on the slopes of Mount Karkin overlooking Lake Wakatipu, Pig Island and the Tooth Peaks, 30 minutes drive away from Queenstown in New Zealand’s South Island. The hillside is a fern-covered slate rock, with amazing views in all directions.
The house is designed to blend into the landscape, invisible from the street and slowly revealing itself upon approaching.
The spaces of the house have been divided into two distinct parts. A curved spine of bedrooms has been dug into the rockface, creating shaded retreat spaces with filtered views over the lake through deep slots in the rammed stone walls.
A curved disk clad in corten steel shingles contains the open living space, held aloft by a number of large green slate boulders excavated from the site. 270 degree views from below the disk allow the ever changing panorama of Lake Wakatipu to be part of the daily life of the house.
