The proposed new Smithfield Quarter is rooted in the rich history of the site and makes reference to the historic street pattern and uses. Rather than creating a quarter reminiscent of the old Birmingham however, Smithfield will generate a new identity by interpreting its roots anew to carry them into the 21st century. At its core will be a diverse and multi cultural collection of functions and forms: Leisure, retail, office and residential will be interwoven around a new vibrant public heart. Smithfield will become a food quarter, its shops, restaurants and concessions embedded in a rich mix of streets, little squares and passageways. Parts of the new quarter will be designed as a leisure destination, linking up with the gay quarter and Chinatown to provide a host of bars, cafes, cinemas and public squares. Towards the south, Smithfield will include a new residential quarter, marked out by private green roof terraces and courtyards. Smithfield will be an architecturally rich quarter, with a combination of neighbourhood and landmark buildings, sustainably designed and with public art embedded within the urban fabric.
